WVU athletics just had one of its best years ever after the dust had settled. WVU Baseball had a historic season, as did Women’s Basketball. WVU Rifle continued its run of dominance with another NCAA national championship. So many teams had tremendous feats this athletic year, it is hard to keep track. Rifle: the crown jewel of consistency
WVU Rifle won its 21st NCAA National Championship, an NCAA record, and its second consecutive title. They finished 18-1 this season and 5-0 in the Great America Rifle Conference. Hayhurst Family Head Coach Jon Hammond helped lead the team to earn his eighth title in 20 seasons with the program. WVU’s most decorated program delivered once again with a title, extending its record for most titles.

Junior Griffin Lake led the Mountaineers and was named NCAA National Championships Most Outstanding Performer. He became the fifth to earn that honor in program history. Camryn Camp and Lauri Syrja also helped the team capture the title from behind with strong air rifle scores. WVU matched the NCAA record air rifle score with a 2395.
Baseball: Omaha at last
The Mountaineers earned a trip to Omaha for the first time in school history after hosting Regional and Super Regional action. They beat Kentucky twice in Morgantown to advance to Super Regionals, where they swept Cal Poly in a packed ballpark at Kendrick Family Ballpark. They lost to North Carolina in the Men’s College World Series, but finished No. 4 overall in the final rankings of the season.
WVU finished with a program-best 47-17 record, as head coach Steve Sabins started his tenure in Morgantown with a second consecutive 40-win season. Gavin Kelly hit 19 home runs this season, which tied the most in a single season in school history. He also broke the record for most total bases in program history with 179. Armani Guzman broke the program record for stolen bases with 42.
Women’s Basketball: Big 12 Champions
WVU Women’s Basketball had a historic season, hosting first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Hope Coliseum for the first time since 1992. They earned the right to host after winning the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City. They beat TCU in the championship game, and Jordan Harrison was named Most Outstanding Player.
The Mountaineers beat Miami (OH) in the first round in front of a sold-out crowd in Morgantown. They came up just short in the second round in front of another electric atmosphere at Hope Coliseum. Head coach Mark Kellogg had another successful season in his third year with the program. He once again made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but cannot get over the hump. He accomplished the goal of hosting games in Morgantown, a huge step in the right direction that put this program on the map.
Men’s Basketball: Crown Champions
WVU did not make the NCAA Tournament on the men’s side, but they still had a successful postseason. They beat Oklahoma, 89-82, in overtime to win the College Basketball Crown and $300,000. Honor Huff scored 38 points, posting his career-high in his final collegiate game. He went 12-for-12 at the line and 8-of-15 from behind the arc. Head coach Ross Hodge had a solid first season at the helm, finding postseason success despite missing the NCAA Tournament. The prize money is also a nice cherry on top of a successful first season.
Soccer: both programs deliver
WVU Women’s soccer finished 14-3-4 this season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. They made an early exit in the Big 12 Tournament with a loss to Kansas, but still found themselves in the NCAA Tournament. They lost in the second round to Georgetown, but still had another successful season under head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
On the other side, WVU Men’s Soccer also got a berth in the NCAA Tournament. They finished 13-5-3 overall, but lost to High Point in the second round. All in all, it was a solid season and something to build on in the coming seasons.
