Burning questions: Ranking WVU’s five biggest games of the 2026 season

The college football season just ended in dramatic fashion, with the Indiana Hoosiers completing an undefeated run by beating the Miami Hurricanes for the national title. With one season in the books, attention now turns to what’s next. Read more: Burning questions: Ranking WVU’s five biggest games of the 2026 season

The 2026 college football schedules have been released, and that includes a fresh slate for the West Virginia Mountaineers. As fans begin circling dates on the calendar, it’s time to take an early look at the games that will define WVU’s upcoming season.

There’s just one problem – the schedule is missing something important: a true rival.

West Virginia will not face Pitt again until 2029. There’s no annual matchup with Virginia Tech. The replacement of the Alabama home-and-home series, now Coastal Carolina this season and Southern Miss next year, simply doesn’t carry the same juice.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for a program competing in a conference that has never quite felt like home. Outside of Cincinnati, a recent addition, Iowa State remains West Virginia’s closest league opponent at nearly 900 miles away.

Still, the 2026 schedule isn’t without intrigue.

There are compelling matchups, challenging road trips, and several games that could shape the Mountaineers’ season – and perhaps their trajectory moving forward.

Let’s break down the top five games on West Virginia’s 2026 football schedule – with a little flair. Or should we say flame?

It’s time to reintroduce the official Couch Burning Rating Scale.

Reminder… this is how many couches get burned if we win the game.

The Official Scale:

  • 1 Couch: Meh. Expected win. Maybe burn a Yankee Candle.
  • 2 Couches: Decent victory. Light the grill, not the furniture.
  • 3 Couches: Conference juice. Fire trucks circle the block.
  • 4 Couches: Rivalry, ranked, or statement win. Mayhem in Morgantown
  • 5 Couches: All-time upset. Light it up like it’s 2007.

For entertainment purposes only. Please don’t actually burn your couch.

No. 5: Houston Cougars

Date: Nov. 21, 2026
Location: Milan Puskar Stadium
Couch Burning Rating: 🔥🔥🔥

Houston enters the 2026 season, coming off a nine-win campaign and carrying real momentum into Big 12 play. The Cougars also added one of the most talked-about quarterbacks in the country in Keisean Henderson, giving the offense instant intrigue.

Head coach Willie Fritz has the program trending in the right direction, and there’s a growing belief that Houston’s best football is still ahead. As long as Fritz remains in charge, the Cougars project as a legitimate conference contender – not a program West Virginia can afford to overlook.

The late-November timing only adds to the intensity. With the game set for Nov. 21 at Milan Puskar Stadium, a home crowd in Morgantown naturally raises the burn rating. Conference games under the lights – especially this late in the season – tend to bring a little extra energy, and this one feels no different.

No. 4: Utah Utes

Date: Nov. 28, 2026
Location: Away — Rice-Eccles Stadium
Couch Burning Rating: 🔥🔥🔥

West Virginia closes the regular season with one of its toughest road tests of the year.

Utah enters 2026 coming off an 11-win season and firmly positioned as a contender in the Big 12 title race. The Utes have become one of the league’s most consistent programs, built on physical play, disciplined execution, and a clear identity on both sides of the ball.

That challenge only intensifies the farther away from Morgantown you get. Rice-Eccles Stadium has long been one of the more difficult road environments in the conference, particularly late in the season when weather, altitude and emotion all come into play.

This matchup earns a three-couch rating because of what it represents. A road win against a Big 12 contender would carry real weight, especially with the calendar flipping to late November. And if it’s for the Big-12 title, the rating will improve.

No. 3: Arizona Wildcats

Date: Oct. 10, 2026
Location: Milan Puskar Stadium
Couch Burning Rating: 🔥🔥🔥

Arizona’s rapid turnaround has made the Wildcats one of the more intriguing teams in the Big 12 heading into 2026. Some analysts have them ranked as a top-25 team entering the season.

After winning just four games two seasons ago, Arizona took a major step forward last year with a nine-win campaign, signaling that the program is trending in the right direction. Much of that momentum starts at quarterback, where Noah Fifita returns as one of the most experienced and productive players in the conference. With the game set for Oct. 10 in Morgantown, the home-field advantage plays a major role in the burn rating. A midseason conference showdown against a rising Big 12 program brings real energy, even if it doesn’t quite reach rivalry status.

No. 2: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Date: Nov. 7, 2026
Location: Away – Jones AT&T Stadium (Lubbock)
Couch Burning Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Texas Tech enters the 2026 season with expectations it has rarely carried.

The Red Raiders are coming off a historic 12–2 campaign that included the program’s first Big 12 championship and its first appearance in the College Football Playoff. That breakthrough season has elevated Tech from conference curiosity to legitimate contender – and made every matchup against them feel heavier.

Much of the spotlight centers on quarterback Brendan Sorsby, the high-profile transfer expected to lead the offense. If Sorsby can stay healthy into November, his combination of athleticism and arm strength gives Texas Tech a dynamic presence under center. He’ll be supported by a rebuilt wide receiver room designed to stretch the field and create matchup problems.

The setting only amplifies the moment. A Nov. 7 trip to Lubbock brings one of the most difficult road environments in the conference, especially when the Red Raiders are in the thick of another Big 12 title chase.

No. 1: Virginia Cavaliers

Date: Sept. 19, 2026
Location: Neutral Site — Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, N.C.)
Couch Burning Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

This one sits at the top of the list for a reason.

Virginia enters the 2026 season fresh off an ACC championship, making this matchup one of the most intriguing nonconference games on West Virginia’s schedule. The Cavaliers bring both confidence and credibility — and that elevates the stakes early in the season.

What separates this game from the rest of the schedule is opportunity.

West Virginia will be an underdog in certain spots this season – Texas Tech in Lubbock being one of them. This matchup feels different. Against a top-tier opponent on a neutral field, the Mountaineers have a legitimate shot to make a statement.

And the setting matters.

Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte is well within West Virginia’s travel footprint, and Mountaineer fans have proven time and again that they travel as well as anyone. Expect a heavy dose of blue and gold inside the stadium, creating an atmosphere that may feel anything but neutral.
