Celebrating one year of WV Sports Nation

Quite frankly, it’s hard to believe that it has already been a year since the launch of WV Sports Nation. While I didn’t join the team until March 30, what the team has been able to do since February 6, 2025, is rather remarkable.

As Editor-in-Chief and one of two columnists for the site, I feel obligated to share what this platform has done for me. Get ready for some personal testimony. Read more: Celebrating one year of WV Sports Nation.

What started out as a bold endeavor into the WVU Athletics media landscape has turned into a site worth being proud of. 934 articles and several style guide changes later, here we are.

Providing a platform

I spent the final nine months of my short time in Morgantown as a member of the WV Sports Nation family. As an aspiring sports journalist and broadcaster, the site gave me an outlet for creativity.

I didn’t grow up a die-hard Mountaineer fan. In fact, I grew up quite the opposite.

It’s no secret that I completed my B.A. program at the in-state rival school (yeah yeah yeah, I know), but it was my 16 months at WVU that proved to be the next step in my journey. I fell in love with it.

Stumbling upon a job posting regarding freelance writing for a brand new sports website is, to this day, one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.

Two title changes later… I’m still learning.

I never thought I’d be dealing with media availability and acting as a working member of the press in such a short time. That credit goes to the Fredericks family and everyone involved with the organization.

Not only did I, along with my team, get these opportunities, but we get the chance to grow as journalists every day. If there’s nothing else you take from this personal note, just remember to support local media.

Building upon a foundation

This time a year ago, we covered a few games a week. Flash forward to now and WV Sports Nation features a little bit of everything. It’s not perfect, but the progress is notable. Onward and upward we aim.

It’ll take time to grow into a powerhouse in such a competitive market, but journalistic integrity comes first. After all, respect must be earned, not given.

I speak for many when I say I couldn’t be more proud of the team around me. It takes an army.

Top moments

Cheers

Call it a fluff piece if you must… it just feels right to give flowers to those involved.

So, here’s to one year of WV Sports Nation! And thanks to you, the reader, too. We couldn’t do it without your support.

There’s no time to dwell any longer, as action resumes later today — business as usual. And don’t forget, baseball season is right around the corner.

Stay up to date with WV Sports Nation for more WVU Athletics coverage.
