Kelly’s ability to dominate both offensively and defensively at multiple positions has elevated his team and redefined two-way excellence in the modern game.
Historic All-American achievement
Kelly made program history by becoming the first WVU player to earn All-American honors at two different positions in the same season. Splitting time between second base and catcher, he excelled at an elite level at both.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Perfect Game named him a Second-Team All-American at second base, while Baseball America honored him as a Second-Team All-American catcher. Behind the plate, he threw out 37% of base stealers and maintained a stellar .983 fielding percentage with more than 300 total chances across both positions.

Elite 2026 offensive statistics
Kelly was the undisputed engine of the WVU offense, leading the team in nearly every major category. He posted a .384 batting average (leading WVU and among the top in the Big 12), a .484 on-base percentage, a .720 slugging percentage, and a remarkable 1.204 OPS. He recorded 89 hits, 17 home runs, and 57 RBIs — all team highs — while demonstrating elite plate discipline by drawing more walks than strikeouts.

Additional 2026 accolades
Beyond All-American honors, Kelly’s standout sophomore campaign earned him national recognition. He was named a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, one of the top amateur players in the country. He shared NCBWA District 2 Co-Player of the Year honors with teammate Maxx Yehl. In addition, Kelly earned NCAA Morgantown Regional MVP, and received a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection.
As MLB draft discussions heat up, Kelly’s unique two-way profile makes him a high-upside prospect with strong early-round potential. For now, the spotlight remains on Omaha, where the sophomore sensation continues chasing history for the Mountaineers.
Kelly and co. play North Carolina in the Sunday nightcap. First pitch from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, is set for 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. local.
