Kansas head football coach Lance Leipold and Arizona State head football coach Kenny Dillingham held a joint press conference Thursday afternoon from Orlando to discuss many of the changing landscapes of college football, particularly the proposed college football playoff expansion and the transfer portal.
College Football Playoff Expansion
The most recent proposal for the college football playoffs is the 5+11 model, which would expand the playoff field to 16 teams with automatic bids for the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips made this pitch to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti at a recent meeting in Charlotte.

Yormark On Current Playoff Format
Yormark made his stance clear on the current playoff format during a recent interview with The Athletic on Wednesday.
“I don’t think 4-4-2-2 is fair.”
“I just don’t think that model speaks to who we are as a conference and what we mean to college football.”- Yormark.
Dillingham Comments On Possible Playoff Expansion
“I really don’t care. At the end of the day, it’s football. Sometimes we lose focus, and everybody focuses on the negatives of college football.”-Dillingham. Leipold Comments On Transfer PortalDuring the press conference, Leipold indicated that Big 12 coaches unanimously voted for a single January transfer portal window.
“As coaches, we unanimously support one portal window, and that is in January.”
“So, what we’d like, why January? We just feel it still it’s a tough thing with calendars right now, where it goes and a chance to get your team settled. You’re signing most of you guys in December. You know what your roster will be like to start the second semester, and you have the opportunity to work and develop and build those relationships and evaluate your team and get ready for the next season.”-Leipold.

Dillingham supports CFP’s change to “straight-seeding”
Dillingham said during the press conference he would support a change to straight seeding, calling it a “great change”, even though it would not have helped Arizona State last season.
“I think it was a great change, even though it would have negatively affected us last year, I mean we lost two games going into it.”
“Anything that creates an open platform for teams like our guys last year to prove that they belong, I’m in support of.”-Dillingham.
Dillingham Praises Big 12 Coaches, Particularly Rich Rod
“I think we have one of the best coached leagues out there.”
“You look across and it’s Rich Rodriguez. That’s a guy who’s going into the Hall of Fame… I think the coaches in this league are phenomenal.”-Dillingham
