Mountaineers charge to second-place tie in Mountaineer Invitational

With a confident final-round charge that showcased their growing depth and firepower, WVU Golf announced its arrival on the national stage by tying for second place at the 11th Mountaineer Invitational in a loaded 19-team field. The Mountaineers surged to a 16-under-par total of 848, highlighted by a strong closing 279 (-9). The result matched No. 8 Texas Tech, finishing just four strokes behind champion Clemson. Along the way, WVU turned heads by knocking off several ranked opponents. This included No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Arkansas, and No. 38 TCU. West Virginia’s performance was especially impressive considering the quality of competition. The Mountaineers defeated several ranked teams throughout the three-day event, including No. 38 TCU by nine strokes, No. 6 Oklahoma State by nine strokes, and No. 5 Arkansas by six strokes.  The strong showing against top competition signals that WVU is becoming a legitimate threat in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.

Turowski shines for WVU

The Mountaineers were led by a balanced attack that placed four players inside the top 18 individually.
Nick Turowski delivered the best performance of the tournament for WVU, posting a 5-under-par 211 (70-73-68) to tie for fifth place. Jack Michael followed closely behind at 4-under 212 (74-67-71), tying for eighth.
Ryan Leach finished tied for 15th at 2-under 214 (71-70-73), while Kaleb Wilson posted an even-par 216 (70-74-72). Wilson’s result was enough to tie for 18th. Harrison Thompson saved his best for last, firing a final-round 68 to climb into a tie for 35th at +8 (76-76-68).

Additional Mountaineer results

As individuals, Westy McCabe shot 67 (75-77-67=219 and tied for 26th place at +3 on the final day of the tournament. Aidan Dortch shot 74-75-72=221 (+5) to finish with a tie for 39th place. Brody Burgess shot 67 on Tuesday, finishing tied for 47th place at +6 (78-77-67=222). Gabe Schmitz shot rounds of 75-77-75=227 (+11).

Up next for the Mountaineers

The Mountaineers will return on April 27-29 for the Big 12 Golf Championship. It takes place at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
