Setting the Scene
It has been almost two weeks since the Mountaineers played a game at Kendrick Family Ballpark, but that ends Friday evening when the Red Raiders come to town. Despite back-to-back losses in non-conference play, the Mountaineers are coming off the month of April, a 30-day span where WVU went 12-0 in conference action thanks to four straight weekend sweeps against Big 12 opponents.
In addition, West Virginia has won eight straight games at home, with six of those victories being conference wins. This Mountaineer squad is going to beat anywhere you play them, and despite having an even better record on the road (22-2), WVU is still stellar at home in 2025 (15-3). It will be a tall task for the Red Raiders to walk into Morgantown and handle business.
Speaking of the Red Raiders, Texas Tech will make the 1,462-mile trek from Lubbock to Morgantown in search of better fortunes, with a losing record in both conference and non-conference action. Texas Tech has lost back-to-back contests, getting swept by UT-Rio Grande Valley at home. In those two games, Texas Tech was outscored 20-8 by the visiting team.

Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, road games have been a struggle all season long. Tech owns a measly 5-12 road record. However, the Red Raiders did have the upper hand against WVU in 2024, when the Mountaineers were swept down in Lubbock. The Red Raiders will have an opportunity to repeat that feat this weekend, albeit against a much-improved Mountaineer team.
Players to Watch
For WVU, Kyle West is coming off a superb performance at the plate against Marshall in Wednesday’s 6-7 loss to the Thundering Herd. West finished the most recent game with three hits in four at-bats, including a solo-home run and two total RBIs. The senior infielder from Hedgesville, West Virginia, is batting .319 in 2025 and is one of many consistent hitters in the Mountaineer rotation.
As for Texas Tech, keep an eye out for Logan Hughes. Hughes boasts a .315 batting average and is the heavy hitter for the Red Raiders. The 5’11 sophomore leads the team in home runs (14), RBI (48), and triples (3). Logan Hughes has also started every game this season, so look for the Florida native to do some damage this weekend.
