Waiting for our moment: what Team USA’s gold means for WVU fans

While I was still wiping tears from my eyes as Johnny Gaudreau’s children were brought onto the ice during the tribute, I realized something in that moment.

Sports aren’t just about winning. They’re about feeling something. And what Team USA gave us in Olympic hockey – from the tribute to the tension to the gold-medal celebration – was one of those rare sports moments that sticks with you long after the final horn. It was emotional- dramatic – and it felt historic.

And it got me thinking about West Virginia fans.

Why not us?

Because while West Virginia University has celebrated championships in rifle and other sports – and those programs deserve every ounce of credit they receive – the truth is there’s another level of sports joy this fan base is still waiting for. The kind that unites an entire state. The kind that comes from football on the biggest stage or a basketball team cutting down the nets on a Monday night in April.

Moments like that don’t come often. Just ask Team USA.

It took 46 years between Olympic gold medals in hockey – nearly half a century of waiting, hoping and wondering if it would ever happen again. And when it finally did, it felt bigger than the medal itself.

That’s where the passion of this fan base comes from. It’s the belief that someday, somehow, West Virginia will reach the mountaintop and claim a national title in one of the major sports.

Because when you live in West Virginia, WVU isn’t just a school. It’s the closest thing the state has to a professional team. It’s the banner the entire state rallies around. It connects small towns, coal towns, river towns and college towns. It’s a common language.

While it may not feel like the football or men’s basketball programs are on the doorstep right now, college athletics doesn’t move the way it once did. In the era of NIL, the transfer portal and rapid roster turnover, the climb doesn’t always take decades. Programs can rise quickly. Indiana reminded the country of that.

And if – or when – it happens for West Virginia, the celebration won’t stay in Morgantown.

It will echo across every county line in the state.

State Pride

Because there may be no other state in America that would feel that moment more deeply. With no professional franchises dividing attention, a national title in football or men’s basketball wouldn’t just be a victory for a university.

It would be a victory for an identity.

It would bind the entire state together in a way only sports can.

And that’s why the hope never fades.

Congratulations to both U.S. hockey teams for bringing home Olympic gold and inspiring a new generation of kids to find their own team, their own dream and their own moment.

Because that’s why we keep watching through the ups and downs.

We’re all chasing that one shared feeling – the kind only sports can deliver.

And when West Virginia’s turn finally comes, the celebration won’t stay in Morgantown.

It will belong to the whole state.
