Wow.
We’re just hours removed from quite the day of WVU Athletics news, and not in the best way. Not only did men’s basketball drop a must-win game to salvage their spot on the bubble, Chase Meyer is off the baseball team. Read more: WVU and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Frankly, the column is set to focus on the Meyer situation, but hoops has to be mentioned first. Fellow columnist Mitch Rogers hyped up the team for a must-win showdown at Kansas State, and it turned into a dud.
It seems to be a Mountaineer tradition of losing a game they should win. On the heels of beating a Quad 1 team in an upset, no less. Postseason hopes, outside of running the table in the conference tournament, are gone.
Moving on to the bigger issue…
Fallout: Meyer shown the door
From a fan perspective, I find it hard to believe that the ace pitcher is off the team. WV Sports Nation first reported, with sources close to the family, that a locker room incident led to Meyer’s dismissal. From Tuesday’s initial report;
Sabins confirmed to WV Sports Nation that Meyer had been dismissed from the team. Later in the day, Sabins addressed the situation with a statement released by the WVU Athletics Communications Department:
“Junior right-handed pitcher Chase Meyer is no longer with our baseball program. I want to thank Chase for his contributions the past three years to our team and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

This is where speculation comes into play.
The same source disputed WVU Baseball Head Coach Steve Sabins’ claim that Meyer’s injury occurred on Thanksgiving break, instead suggesting it happened in an offseason “challenge.”
Whatever the deal is, it’s not a good look for WVU Baseball. The question is — where do the two parties go from here?
The team side
At the time of publication, WVU Baseball is 8-2, preparing for an impromptu date with Marshall on Wednesday.
Meyer pitched 3.1 innings in two relief appearances this season, picking up a win in the process. The outings served as part of the rehabilitation cycle.
On paper, WVU is talented enough to win without their ace. All due respect, though, look who they’ve beaten. Any win is a good win, but pitchers will be tested in Big 12 play.
Personally, I consider Meyer one of the catalysts who would finally propel WVU to Omaha. He won’t be a piece of that puzzle, if they go that far.
I’m more interested in what’s next for the junior righty with a curveball to die for.
The player side
Meyer came into 2026 riding the high of a 9-2 record the year before, with a cornerstone role on the pitching staff. The North Carolina native racked up 63 strikeouts in ’25, with only three starts.
The 6’2 pitcher is/was in his third season, all with the Mountaineers.
With the season starting less than a month ago, it puts Meyer in a terrible spot. There is no immediate move he can make, since transferring is off the table for now. Mind you, there’s over two months left in the regular season alone.
Meyer has at least one more year of eligibility to burn, if he chooses to try and boost his draft stock. The righty can try his luck without throwing another ball at the collegiate level, but alas.
Whatever his long-term plan is, his immediate workload is up to him — even though it won’t be playing college ball.
I’ll say this… If he joins another team that happens to be on WVU’s schedule in 2027, watch out.
The next step
Simply put, Tuesday was not the best day all-around for WVU Athletics.
Meyer, now off the team, goes down his own path. We here at WV Sports Nation are set to monitor the situation.
The same goes for the Mountaineers, as the program has to shake off a landmark dismissal before conference play even begins.
Whatever the situation, we’ll have you covered. WVU Baseball is back in action on March 4 at Jack Cook Field in Huntington, West Virginia. The Mountaineers go toe-to-toe, with a bad taste in their mouth, against a rival.
Marshall is coming off a 13-4 upset at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, so it should make for a riveting matchup.
Editor’s note: Wednesday’s game against Marshall has since been canceled due to inclement weather.
