For the first time this season, the Mountaineers went on the road and visited Army at West Point. Substitute Saige Wimes helped the Mountaineers get a win on Clinton Field after a late goal put WVU up 2-1.

Abbey Olexa also notched her first goal of the season to put the Mountaineers on the board in the second half.

First half

Neither the Mountaineers nor the Black Knights could get much going throughout the first half. Despite multiple shots from both sides, the match remained scoreless the entire opening half.

West Virginia started aggressive with three shots in the first 16 minutes of the game. The teams traded corner kicks around the 20-minute mark, but neither could take advantage of the opportunities.

Around the 30-minute mark, WVU rattled off three-straight shot attempts, with Anna Hauer nearly finding the back of the net at 31:53.

Other than a few corner kicks from West Virginia, the closing minutes of the first half remained stagnant.

Second half

The Mountaineers kicked it into a second gear to open the second half after taking three shots in the first 10 minutes.

Following a few more shot attempts around the 60-minute mark, the Mountaineers got on the board after Sophia Nickel assisted on Olexa’s goal at 64:23.

However, Army quickly matched with a goal of their own from Bella Conti just three minutes later. Nickel nearly regained the lead for the Mountaineers three minutes after, but it was saved by Karalyn Dail.

After that back and forth from both teams, the game went quiet for over 20 minutes. With the game almost over, Gianna Koss assisted Wimes for the game-winning goal at 85:40.

Army tried to counter with a late game-tying goal, but its final two shot attempts failed in the final two minutes.

West Virginia will now return home to face rival Marshall at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. on September 6.
