WVU’s Beauty and the Beast meet highlights weekend action

WVU was busy this weekend outside of basketball. The tennis team’s matches were canceled due to weather, but the wrestling, gymnastics, and swimming and diving teams were in action. The highlight came at Hope Coliseum during the annual Beauty and the Beast meet, where wrestling defeated No. 23 Wyoming and gymnastics hosted No. 15 Denver. Tennis

WVU’s tennis matches against Georgetown and Fairmont State on January 25 were canceled due to the weather. Their next matches are on Saturday, January 31, against Temple and Cleveland State. The doubleheader starts at 10 a.m. at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, WV.

Wrestling

No. 19 WVU moved to 9-3 overall, defeating No. 23 Wyoming, 21-15, at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown on Saturday, January 24. WVU is 4-1 in the Big 12, which is its best start in the conference since joining in 2012. They competed simultaneously with the gymnastics team at the Beauty and the Beast meet at Hope Coliseum.

WVU’s first wins in the match came at 141, 157, and 174 pounds, but they lost via major decision at 149 and 165 pounds. Wyoming’s No. 10 Eddie Neitenbach won via decision, 4-2, over WVU’s No. 21 Ian Bush at 184 pounds, which evened the match after six bouts.

The Mountaineers won three of the final four bouts to win against their second consecutive ranked opponent. No. 15 Rune Lawrence beat Lane Foard via decision, 9-4, at 184 pounds. WVU lost the next bout at heavyweight, as No. 9 Christian Carroll won via major decision, 12-4. No. 9 Jett Strickenberger defeated Sefton Douglass via major decision, 12-4, at 125 pounds to give the Mountaineers an 18-15 lead heading into the final match.

Freshman No. 17 Gunner Andrick (WVU) faced No. 28 Luke Willochell at 133 pounds. Andrick trailed 3-2 after the first period. An Andrick reversal gave him the lead before an escape by Willochell tied the bout after the second period. Andrick secured the riding time point by grappling Willochell for two minutes and secured the match for WVU.

WVU’s next match is on February 6 at 7 p.m. against Missouri at Hope Coliseum.

Gymnastics

WVU gymnastics recorded a final team score of 193.375 in its home opener against Denver, but fell to No. 15 Denver, 196-193.375. They competed alongside the wrestling team at the Beauty and the Beast meet in front of 2,629 fans, the 10th-highest attendance mark in gymnastics history.

Sophomore Karleigh DiCello led the way for WVU in the opening rotation, with a season-best 9.875 on vault. Emerson Smith and Sophia Rice also tallied 9.8, helping put WVU in first place after one rotation with a score of 49.025. WVU recorded a team score of 48.425 on uneven bars. Amber Lowe led the lineup with a score of 9.85, while Kaelyn Skeel scored 9.775.

WVU struggled on the balance beam, recording a score of 47.65. They finished the meet on the floor exercise with a 48.275 team score. Junior Jurnee Lane led the way with a score of 9.875, and Smith scored 9.85. WVU topped the podium on three of five events, with DiCello finishing first on vault, Lowe on bars, and Lane earning the top spot on floor. It was not enough, however, as Denver stayed steady and won the meet. WVU welcomes Pitt, Cornell, and Kent State to Hope Coliseum on January 30 at 7 p.m. for its only quad meet at home.

Swimming & diving

WVU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned victories on January 24 at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. The men’s team (3-1) defeated Villanova, 231-67, and the women’s team (3-3) beat Duquesne, 184-115, and lost to Villanova, 160-140 in a dual meet.

The men’s team dominated against Villanova. Junior Vedaant Madhavan won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:42.71. Freshman Gabriel Tortola took home second place in the same event. Sophomore Joey Stebbins won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:45.36, which ranks eighth all-time in school history. Parker Sterlitz won the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 4:30.17.

WVU won on the 1-meter and 3-meter in diving. Glenn Eeloriaga won on 1-meter, with 320.20 total points, and placed second on 3-meter. Levi Hellmann won on the 3-meter with 347.10 total points.

Gabriela Martin had two individual wins in the 100-yard freestyle (50.49) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.89). Natasha Whittal placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, with a final time of 54.14, which is the sixth-fastest in the event in school history. Maddie Smutny placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.11.

WVU won on 1-meter thanks to Stevi Chalemou (255.95), and Abigail Sullivan placed second (251.90). Both teams return to action on January 30 at 11 a.m. to face Penn State in Morgantown.
