West Virginia sophomore Ryan Leach completed the tournament with a school record 17-under-par to capture his second collegiate tournament. Recapping West Virginia’s Performance In The Tournament
Day 1
West Virginia kicked off the fall season with a historic performance, posting a program-record 22-under-par 266. Sophomore Ryan Leach matched a school-best -9 in the opening round, setting a blazing tone for the tournament.
Ryan Leach finished day one leading the field after two rounds, shooting a -16 with scores of 63 (-9) and 65 (-7), holding a five-stroke advantage over the nearest competitors. His first-round -9 matches the WVU record for the lowest round relative to par, set by Mark Goetz in the final round of the 2021 Mountaineer Invitational.

Leach’s 63 fell just one stroke short of Logan Perkins’ school-record 62, shot on a par-70 course at the 2020 Florida Gators Invitational. The Mountaineers commanded the team leaderboard at -40 (266-270), five strokes ahead of Purdue in the 12-team tournament. WVU’s opening-round 266, a program-best -22, surpassed the previous school record of -17, set at the 2023-24 Dorado Beach Collegiate and 2021-22 Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate.
The 266 also eclipsed WVU’s prior record-low team scores of 271, which was established at the Dorado Beach Collegiate (2023-24), Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate (2021-22), and Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic (2018-19).
Four Mountaineers shine in the individual top 10
Sophomore Nick Turowski finished the day in sixth at -9 with rounds of 66 (-6) and 69 (-3).
Senior Kaleb Wilson finished at seventh at -8, carding 69 (-3) and 67 (-5).
Freshman Jack Michael made his collegiate debut in ninth place at -7 with scores of 68 (-4) and 69 (-3).
Junior Harrison Thompson posted rounds of 74 and 72. Senior Westy McCabe competed as an individual and recorded back-to-back 70s (-2) to sit in 20th.Collectively, WVU’s six golfers delivered a dominant performance, racking up 10 eagles and 50 birdies across the day’s play.w
Day 2
In a historic performance at the Island Resort Collegiate, Ryan Leach dominated with record-breaking scores. Leach, who previously claimed The Stono as a freshman, became the fourth Mountaineer in history to secure multiple individual titles. This marks WVU’s 11th collegiate tournament victory by a golfer. His remarkable -17 (63-65-71=199) shattered school records. Leach surpassed Mark Goetz’s -15 and 201 total, both set at the 2021 Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate.

The Mountaineers swept the podium, with senior Kaleb Wilson finishing just one stroke back at -16 (69-67-64=200), highlighted by a career-best 64 in the final round. Sophomore Nick Turowski claimed third at -15 (66-69-66=201), achieving a personal-best 66. Freshman Jack Michael, in his collegiate debut, posted an impressive -7 (68-69-72=209) to finish 18th. Junior Harrison Thompson scored +4 (74-72-74=220), while senior Westy McCabe, competing individually, finished 23rd at -6 (70-70-70=210).
Making their debut at the event, WVU’s team score of -55 (266-270-273=809) over 54 holes obliterated school records for under-par and total scores, previously set at -28 and 826. This performance tied for the 18th-best 54-hole total in NCAA history, cementing the Mountaineers’ place among the sport’s elite.
West Virginia defeated runner-up Purdue by six strokes to claim the title. Michigan (-42), Michigan State (-32), Saint Mary’s (-28), Nebraska (-26), UCF (-22), Illinois State (-19), UTEP (-18), South Dakota State (-11), Ball State (-3), and Miami University (-2) completed the team leaderboard.
The Mountaineers return to competition this Sunday and Monday at The Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minnesota.
