Around the Big 12: Cyclones Stand Alone at 3-0

Kyle Konrady’s 54-yard field goal with under two minutes left broke a 13-all tie and broke Iowa State’s six-year home losing streak against in-state rival Iowa. The Cyclones earned a 16-13 win over the Hawkeyes at Jack Trice Stadium, marking their first win over Iowa in Ames since 2011. Read More: Around the Big 12: Cyclones Stand Alone at 3-0

Iowa State (3-0) is the Big 12’s lone three-win team, courtesy of its Week 0 win over Kansas State. The Cyclones entered Week 2 having won four of their past 12 matchups with the Hawkeyes, but all of those wins came in Iowa City. Saturday marked the first time since 2018 that the home team claimed the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

Offense was at a premium, as Iowa State gained just 238 yards to Iowa’s 214. The Cyclones will close out non-conference play on Saturday at Arkansas State.

Bears Upend Mustangs

Sawyer Robertson threw two late touchdown passes to bring Baylor back, as the Bears overcame a 14-point fourth quarter deficit at SMU. Baylor forced overtime, then beat the Mustangs 48-45 in the second session in Dallas.

Bryson Washington struggled against the SMU ground defense, but Robertson more than made up with it for Baylor (1-1). His aerial attack threw for 440 yards and four scores, allowing the Bears to survive SMU’s strong offensive day. The Bears will face FCS foe Samford on Saturday.

Red Raiders Rout Kent State

Texas Tech scored 48 first-half points and was never threatened against MAC foe Kent State. The Red Raiders let off the gas in the second half, beating the Golden Flashes 62-14 in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders (2-0) scored on eight of their first nine possessions and took a Kent State interception back for a score, building a seven-score lead. Kent State didn’t score until the fourth quarter and committed three first-half turnovers. The Red Raiders host Oregon State on Saturday.

Ducks Dominate Cowboys

Oregon scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions, and Oklahoma State never came close to threatening, falling 69-3 to the Ducks in Eugene for the worst loss of Mike Gundy’s tenure.

Oklahoma State (1-1) saw its already hopeless cause become a bigger nightmare near the end of the third quarter. Down 55-3, Zane Flores ended the quarter throwing two pick-sixes. The Cowboys punted or turned the ball over on their final 11 possessions. Oklahoma State has lost 10 straight FBS games and is off this week before facing Tulsa next Friday.

Jayhawks Lose Lead at Missouri

Kansas built an early 21-6 lead over rival Missouri, but the Jayhawks’ conservative play cost them, as the Tigers scored the game’s final 14 points in a 42-31 win over Kansas in Columbia.

The Jayhawks (2-1) took their first loss because they couldn’t get Missouri off the field. Three of Missouri’s second-half drives lasted at least 10 plays, and the last one was a three-play touchdown drive that finished the game. Kansas also hurt its chances by going three-and-out twice in the fourth quarter. The Jayhawks are out of non-conference games and are off until hosting West Virginia on Sept. 20.

Bulldogs Upset Sun Devils

Arizona State fell behind 17 points at Mississippi State, then gave up the winning score on a busted coverage, losing 24-20 to the Bulldogs in Starkville.

The Sun Devils (1-1) gained just six yards on their first five possessions. Arizona State eventually got its offense going, but by then, it had allowed Mississippi State to hang around too long. ASU held the ball almost 38 minutes, but the slow start proved crucial. The Sun Devils will host Texas State Saturday.

Bearcats Ground Falcons

Cincinnati only saw the ball for 22 minutes against Bowling Green, but the Bearcats still built a 21-0 lead in a 34-20 win over the Falcons. Brendan Sorsby accounted for all four touchdowns, throwing for three and running one in. Sorsby threw for 333 yards as Cincinnati (1-1) mostly stuck to the air. Sorsby was also the leading rusher for his team, with a mere 40 yards.

The Bearcats will host Northwestern State on Saturday.

Buffaloes Grind Past Delaware

Ryan Staub threw a pair of touchdown passes, and Colorado gradually found its way to a 31-7 win over Delaware in Boulder.

The Buffaloes (1-1) still didn’t look like they’ve found a replacement for Shedeur Sanders. Colorado instead opted to play more methodically as it tries to find a solution. The Buffaloes forced two turnovers, mitigating the fact that they only outgained the Blue Hens by two yards.

Colorado visits Houston on Friday.

Wildcats Go Silent in Loss to Army

Kansas State took a surprise second loss, losing a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter in a 24-21 home loss to Army.

The Black Knights only let K-State (1-2) see the ball for three of the game’s final 30 minutes. Army pulled off three drives of at least seven minutes in the second half, scoring 17 points on them. Kansas State’s only second-half score was Bryce Noernberg’s 99-yard kickoff return. The Wildcats travel to Arizona on Friday.

Utes Crush Cal Poly

Devon Dampier threw for three touchdown passes and Utah cruised past FCS Cal Poly for a 63-9 win in Salt Lake City. The Utes (2-0) scored five touchdowns on the ground and had no issues against the Mustangs. Utah has now gone 17-1 in 18 home openers under Kyle Whittingham.

The Utes visit former conference rival Wyoming on Saturday.

Cougars Pull Away From Rice

Stephon Johnson hauled in a 74-yard touchdown pass and Will James returned an interception 37 yards for a score, as Houston scored 21 fourth-quarter points in a 35-9 win over city rival Rice.

The Cougars (2-0) forced two turnovers and held Rice under 250 yards of total offense. They host Colorado on Friday.

Knights Blast North Carolina A&T

Jaden Nixon took the opening kickoff back for a score and Central Florida routed North Carolina A&T 68-7 in Orlando.

The Knights (2-0) piled up 560 yards of offense and forced three turnovers. Nixon carried the ball just four times, but scored two touchdowns, going for runs of 87 and 66 yards. Central Florida is off this week before hosting North Carolina next week.

Wildcats Earn Second Win

Noah Fifita threw five touchdown passes in three quarters of action, and Arizona hit 40 points for the second straight game, beating Weber State 48-3 in Tucson.

Arizona (2-0) didn’t punt for the first time until the third quarter. By that time, it led 41-0 and immediately followed with a pick-six for its final score the game. The Wildcats will host another group of Wildcats in purple for the second straight week, as they’ll host Kansas State on Friday.

Cougars Ease Past Cardinal

BYU forced four Stanford turnovers and held the Cardinal to just 165 yards, earning a 27-3 win over Stanford in Provo.

Will Ferrin kicked four field goals for BYU (2-0), which forced a safety and was never threatened. LJ Martin gained 110 yards on 18 carries, although he didn’t score.

BYU is off this week and will travel to East Carolina next week.
