About the Kansas Jayhawks

The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, Kansas, and the Jayhawks play their home games at David Booth Memorial Stadium. “The Booth” is currently undergoing major renovations, updates that are anticipated to be complete in time for the 2025 home opener against Fresno State on August 23rd. With a reported capacity of approximately 40,000 following the renovations, the venue remains one of the smallest in the Big 12 Conference, alongside Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Jayhawks have struggled mightily against the Mountaineers over the years, with their only wins against WVU coming in 2013 and 2022. Kansas is coming off a 5-7 season in 2024, a campaign that featured several close games and tough road environments.

The program has been on an upward trend after COVID-19, finally righting the ship after several years of being a conference bottom dweller. A 9-4 run in 2023 and a middle-of-the-pack year in 2022 were a welcome sight for Jayhawk fans after consistently losing eight to 10 games each season for years on end.

Matchup History

WVU, as mentioned, has dominated the all-time series against Kansas, only falling to the Jayhawks in 2013 and 2022. The first contest between the two programs came long before they were both in the Big 12, as Kansas traveled to Mountaineer Field to face the old gold and blue on November 8th, 1941.

West Virginia prevailed, 21-0, and the two teams did not share the gridiron against until the Mountaineers joined the Big 12. In the 2012 regular season finale, Geno Smith and company celebrated senior day with a 59-10 trouncing of the Jayhawks. Kansas got its revenge the following year when WVU visited Lawrence for the first time, as the Mountaineers fell 31-19. The next eight games went in favor of the Mountaineers, and West Virginia has held the high ground in the series since.

WVU currently holds a 4-1 record when traveling to Kansas, winning the past four times after dropping the game on the first visit in 2013. Across the 13 total matchups between the two storied programs, the Mountaineers have combined to outscore the Jayhawks 498-284. WVU averages 38.3 points per game against Kansas, compared to just 21.8 points per game for the Jayhawks.

The 2024 meeting between the Big 12 foes was a close one, as WVU clawed back after a lengthy rain delay at Milan Puskar Stadium to defeat Kansas, 32-28. With the series providing close games in the past three contests, this season’s meeting could be another toss-up.
