Weekly roundup: WVU golf climbs to 15th at Big 12 Championship; T&F shines at East Coast Relays

WVU Golf showed strong resilience at the Big 12 Championship, climbing from 33rd place after the first day to finish 15th overall with a team total of 1,164 (+44). That was good for finishing five shots ahead of No. 48 Colorado. Senior Westy McCabe led the Mountaineers throughout, posting consistent rounds to secure a 37th-place individual finish at +8, while Kaleb Wilson’s standout 2-under 68 on Tuesday propelled the team’s mid-tournament surge.
Meanwhile, WVU Track & Field wrapped up a solid showing at the East Coast Relays on Saturday, highlighted by Annishka McDonald’s runner-up finish in the high jump at 1.76 meters. The Mountaineers now look ahead to the WVU Last Chance Meet on May 9 as they continue building momentum into the postseason. Golf

WVU Golf competed in the Big 12 Championship last week. Senior Westy McCabe led the Mountaineers with rounds of 72-71 that put them in 33rd place at +3. Jack Michael shot 75-73 (+8). Ryan Leach finished day one with rounds of 77-72 (+9), while Kaleb Wilson (80-71) and Nick Turowski (74-77) both finished the day at +11.

Senior golfer Kaleb Wilson shot 2-under-par on Tuesday, allowing WVU to jump up two spots in the team standings. Wilson’s round of 68 put him 52nd in the individual standings at +9. Westy McCabe shot +2 on Tuesday, giving him a score of +5 to place him at 38th place. Ryan Lech shot +3 and Jack Michael was +4. Both tied for 64th place at +12. Nick Turowski shot 5-over-par in the third round, finishing the day at +19.

West Virginia finished the second day of the tournament by jumping two spots in the team standings to 14th place after shooting +7.

Westy McCabe posted a 37th place finish on the final day of the tournament. McCabe posted a 8-over-par for the week with rounds of 72-71-72-3=288. Kaleb Wilson shot Even par over the last three rounds to secure a 46th place tie. Wilson shot rounds of 80-71-68-71=290 (+10).  Ryan Leach finished at +15 with rounds of 77-72-73-73=295. Jack Michael finished at +17 with rounds of 75-73-74-75=297. Nick Turowski shot rounds of 74-80-75-80=309 (+29).

The Mountaineers finished the tournament in 15th place with rounds of 298-287-287-292=1164 (+44), finishing five shots ahead of No. 48 Colorado.

Track and Field 

WVU Track & Field wrapped up competition in the East Coast Relays on Saturday. Lily Haught finished in 18th place in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 1:01.95. Annishka McDonald led WVU with a second place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.76 meters. Olivia Cress finished in sixth place with a mark of 1.68 meters.  The squad returns to action on Saturday, May 9 for the WVU Last Chance Meet.
