No. 15 WVU Baseball has two weeks to make a final push for Big 12 title contention. Before the final stretch, the Mountaineers must take on Marshall in Charleston Tuesday. Read more: WVU Baseball jumps to No. 15, aims for in-state sweep as regular season winds down.
WVU holds a 2-0 lead over the Thundering Herd in 2026, winning games in both Morgantown and Huntington. The Mountaineers scraped by at Jack Cook Field in the first meeting before dominating wire-to-wire at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

The series now turns to neutral grounds (and former off-campus home of Marshall Baseball), GoMart Ballpark. Taking place in the Mountain State’s capital, the sold-out game is garnering anticipation statewide. Marshall took last year’s game in Charleston, 7-6, in a wild affair.
Where the Mountaineers stand
WVU jumped three spots to No. 15 in the most recent D1 Baseball rankings released Monday. The ascension comes as a result of a much-needed sweep over a solid Kansas State squad. The sweep gave the Mountaineers a 3-0 record on the week, as the midweek matchup against Penn State fell victim to poor weather yet again.
Tuesday’s game against Marshall does not do much in terms of Big 12 standings, but every win counts in the grand scheme of things.

Coming into the week, WVU trails Kansas by four games for first place in the conference. The Mountaineers sit tied with Arizona State for second, with UCF trailing in third by a singular game. WVU gets the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Sun Devils, but it all comes down to the Mountaineers’ trip to Lawrence, Kansas. Ideally, WVU would need to win two games or sweep to make a last ditch effort for repeating as regular season champions.
WVU’s offense seems to have returned to its potential after a downtrodden week, scoring 29 runs across three games against the Wildcats. It will need to remain that way against a Marshall squad that despite its struggles, averages 6.49 runs per game. Given how the most recent non-conference game went for WVU, a midweek tilt cannot be underestimated.
About the opponent
Marshall is coming off a series loss to James Madison, with the squad managing to control game two with a 9-0 win Saturday.
It has been a disappointing back half of the season for the Thundering Herd after a stretch in March where MU won 10 of 12 games. That stretch included wins against conference foes and a road win at Virginia Tech.
Marshall has now lost eight of its past 11.
The game against WVU marks the Herd’s penultimate non-conference contest, with the final one slated for a rematch against VT.
Tune in
First pitch from the sold-out GoMart Ballpark in Charleston is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday. It seems to be a trend with non-conference play, but there is a chance for rain again. Granted, it looks to be rather minimal (knock on wood). Temperatures for the early innings are hovering in the mid-to-upper 70s according to several forecasts.
