WVU falls short to Clemson 70-67

The Mountaineers fell short in their first game of the Shriner’s Children’s Charleston Classic. They lost a close game to Clemson, 70-67, after leading by six points with four minutes remaining. The loss was the first of the season as WVU moves to 5-1. They play the loser of Georgia and Xavier, and the game is at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23. WVU falls short to Clemson 70-67

WVU had an 11-point lead with a little over ten minutes left in the game, but could not hold back Clemson. The Tigers outscored them 45-35 in the second half, erasing the seven-point lead WVU had taken into the half. The Mountaineers had a two-point lead with about two and a half minutes remaining, but lost it and never regained it.

Honor Huff scored 17 points, making three of four threes, and was the leading scorer for the Mountaineers. Chance Moore had 16 points off the bench, to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Jasper Floyd scored 14 points and had four steals and four turnovers. Clemson got the job done with five players in double digits, and none over 15.

First half

WVU was down 12-7 to start the game, but made a couple of threes to tie it at 15. Treysen Eaglestaff made one of those threes and scored five points in the first half. He did not score in the second half and finished with five points in 17 minutes. Moore came off the bench, but scored seven points and made a half-court shot to beat the buzzer at the end of the half.

The three-pointer was the name of the game for most of the night for WVU. They made four of 12 in the first half, and 9-23 overall for 39%. The big key to the game was points off turnovers. WVU forced seven turnovers in the first half and scored 13 points off them. They did not score as many points off turnovers in the second half.

Second half

Honor Huff had 10 of his 17 in the second half and made a couple of early threes. Moore had a turnover and missed two shots in three consecutive possessions with about three minutes, and Clemson made two three-pointers and a layup to take the lead. Moore answered with a layup after a timeout to cut the lead to one.

They made two of four free throws in the final 30 seconds, but WVU only cut the lead to one. Brenen Lorient dunked the ball on a fast break with 1.5 seconds remaining, and made it difficult to win. The senior forward finished with four points, but should have had two and passed the ball outside the arc. The team played well and Moore had a great season debut, but it was a tough loss.

Final analysis

WVU must move on from this loss quickly, as it can pick up another quality win before conference play starts on Sunday. Lorient likely should have passed the ball to give them a shot to tie the game with only 1.5 seconds remaining. The team is forcing a lot of steals against good teams, and Moore can help in many ways.
