WVU enters its first road game with momentum

The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 after beating the Rhode Island Rams and the George Washington Revolutionaries. WVU survived Rhode Island’s late-game rally before producing a more comfortable 78-66 victory over George Washington.

As expected, the game stayed close down the stretch, with WVU leading GW 72-65 with 2:48 left. But thanks to a defensive effort that did not give up a field goal in the last two minutes, and a key 3-pointer from Skylar Forbes, the home team produced a double-digit victory.

Forbes led a trio of double-digit scorers with 26 points, hitting 10 of 14 shots overall, including a 6-for-10 effort from beyond the arc. Zahirah Walton contributed 17 points, six boards, and five dimes. Meanwhile, Divine Tubma led the second unit with a solid 15-point, nine-rebound effort.

Georgia Tech is also off to a strong start

On the other side of this matchup, the Yellow Jackets have also won their first two games. Their latest outing was an impressive 84-58 over Samford.

Georgia Tech held a 10-point advantage at the break. However, the narrative changed after that, as a 43-28 second-half burst turned a competitive game into a rout.

Like WVU, the Yellow Jackets are formidable at the defensive end of the floor. In fact, they held Samford to 33 percent overall and a woeful 21 percent (5-for-24) from 3-point range.

WVU at Georgia Tech: Who has the edge?

Georgia Tech represents the toughest opponent West Virginia has faced thus far. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 82 points per game while allowing just 61.5, and they’ve moved the ball well early in the season, averaging 23.5 assists per contest. If Georgia Tech can limit turnovers and force the Mountaineers into a half-court game, it could create problems for WVU.
The Mountaineers’ depth has been evident early in the season, with multiple players making significant contributions. Gia Cooke erupted for a career-high 28 points in the season opener, while Skylar Forbes is averaging 17 points per game. Zahirah Walton has also provided steady scoring, averaging 14.5 points while connecting on 61 percent of her field-goal attempts.

Prediction: West Virginia gets its first road victory of the season
