JJ Quinerly Update and Overseas Commitment

JJ Quinerly is outperforming expectations as a rookie drafted in the third round. She has started 13 consecutive games, while playing in 28 games this season. The Wings are 8-22 this season, so playoffs are out of the question, but the young team is gaining valuable minutes. Paige Bueckers, Quinerly, and Aziaha James are all playing solid minutes as rookies and should continue to grow as this team evolves around them. Quinerly also announced a commitment when the WNBA season ends. Read more: JJ Quinerly Update and Overseas Commitment.

JJ Quinerly Update and Overseas Commitment

JJ Quinerly is having a solid rookie season with the Dallas Wings, but is preparing to play overseas during the WNBA offseason. She signed with the Greek women’s basketball club, P.A.O.K. Thessaloniki, in the Greek A1 Women’s Basketball league. Many players in the WNBA play basketball overseas in the offseason to make more money.

The pay in the WNBA is not on the same scale as the NBA, and players can make better wages overseas. The Dallas Wings signed Quinerly to a three-year contract worth just under $205,000, averaging about $68,000 per year. Quinerly’s salary in Greece remains undisclosed, but it will supplement her WNBA earnings.

The WNBA regular season ends on September 11, and the Greek league begins in early October. The Dallas Wings’ guard will remain busy in the offseason overseas.

Rookie Season Update

Quinerly is averaging 6.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in her rookie season in the WNBA. She is also averaging 0.8 steals and 0.2 blocks per game. She is shooting 41.8% from the field, 35.7% from three, and 85.4% from the free-throw line.

Quinerly did not find herself in the starting lineup until June 28, but has taken advantage of her opportunity. She has started every game since then and is playing well. Since joining the starting lineup, she averages 24.4 minutes, 10.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Quinerly also averages 1.2 steals and 0.4 blocks per game.

In the Wings’ latest game, she only played six minutes, which was surprising. They lost to the New York Liberty, but they had traded DiJonai Carrington two days prior. Carrington was initially in the starting lineup to start the season, but got injured and lost her starting role upon her return. She was backing up Bueckers and Quinerly, but left a void in the rotations.

Quinerly did not start the second half in that game, but it is unclear why she did not play after being removed. She has not played fewer than 16 minutes in a start all season, so it is a mystery why she did not play more. It could have been a coach’s decision or an undisclosed injury. Either way, there is room for more playing time with Carrington out of the equation. Quinerly must continue to impress with her minutes to earn it, but she has performed admirably thus far.
