Plenty to love about WVU Athletics: a Valentine’s Day column

Love is in the air. Some people love it, others hate the red-soaked holiday. In honor of the occasion, here are some things to warm your heart as a member of the Mountaineer faithful at the moment. Read more: Plenty to love about WVU Athletics: a Valentine’s Day column.

February 14… a day on the calendar dedicated to roses, chocolates, dinner dates, and more. Why not get in the mood to talk about what’s going well for WVU Athletics?

While the football team from last year is probably the kid in class you were reluctant to give a card to in your grade school days, the women’s basketball successes and high hopes for baseball season are enough to give any fan heart eyes.

Let’s get into it.

A moment for the ladies

Every well-mannered gentleman knows the drill. Ladies first.

WVU Women’s Basketball is firing on all cylinders as March Madness draws near. The Mountaineers demolished UCF by 50 points on Wednesday, staying near the top of the Big 12 leaderboard.

This team is deep. It helps when the bench gets to come in and lay waste in conference action, too.

For example, Riley Makalusky came out and dropped 20 points on the Knights, compared to a sub-five PPG average on the season. Performances like these matter when it comes to postseason play.

With Jordan Harrison, Meme Wheeler, Sydney Shaw, and Gia Cooke performing in synchrony, WVU is hard to stop. All roads lead to a rematch with TCU, a game that carries high stakes regarding conference standings.

The Horned Frogs stole a 51-50 victory in Morgantown in January, so I’d say it’s time for WVU to take it to Fort Worth.

Love triangle? No, try love diamond

If you haven’t picked up a hint through our coverage this week, we here at WV Sports Nation love baseball. I, personally, love watching the Mountaineers own the diamond daily.

You can read more about what to expect this season in my preview from earlier this week, but this team should be a lot of fun to watch. WVU Baseball Head Coach Steve Sabins and co. are sure to have an electric team grace the field this season.

Nothing beats a weekday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark, listening to Sweet Caroline and/or Country Roads. That’s just my opinion, anyway.

Here’s hoping for another deep postseason run from the Mountaineers.

Rifle (still) reigns supreme

WVU Rifle (at the time of publication) is battling Kentucky in Morgantown, celebrating Senior Day. It’s a matchup between the top two rifle squads in the country.

Rifle is often left out of the media coverage mix, but is hands down the most successful program at WVU. They’re the reigning national champions, for goodness sake!

The title defense continues as NCAA Championship season turns the corner.

We didn’t forget you!

  • Men’s Basketball defense: Hopefully you get some help from the other end before it’s too late.
  • Football transfer portal class: Welcome to Motown! Let’s try to go bowling this year.
  • Wrestling: Absolute machines.
  • Gymnastics: Consistency is key.
  • Tennis: Hot start.
  • Swim & Dive: Much improved.
  • Soccer: Is it August yet?

All in good fun

Seriously, enjoy your Valentine’s Day weekend, everyone. Everybody knows the love and loyalty that the WVU fanbase carries for their Mountaineers. Sit back, enjoy some chocolate, and love someone.
