For the second straight year, the West Virginia Mountaineers (44-14) secured a spot in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament in baseball. Beginning on Saturday, WVU will face the #3 LSU Tigers (46-15) in a best-of-three series at the infamous Alex Box Stadium. Read more WVU baseball heads to Baton Rouge for Super Regional round below.
Setting the Scene
The Mountaineers and Tigers are coming off successful regional outings, albeit via two vastly different paths. LSU stumbled against Little Rock in the penultimate contest, a shocking loss that forced a final game to determine a champion. LSU erased an early deficit against the underdog opponent on Monday to take a 10-6 victory and another regional title under their belts.

As for WVU, the Mountaineers got back to business in the Clemson Regional, winning all three games dramatically to advance to the Super Regionals for the second consecutive season. Until the final series of the regular season, it was shaping up for West Virginia to host a regional. That would not be the case, as WVU dropped eight of its final 11 games in the regular season and did not advance past the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tournament.
Luckily, the Mountaineers thrived on the road all season long, toting a 24-5 record in true road games. That dominance will have to carry over when WVU strolls into Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Saturday, facing a team that is even better at home than the Mountaineers are when they are on the road. The Tigers hold a record of 33-6 at Alex Box Stadium this season, a venue notorious for being one of the most intimidating places to play as an opponent in the country.
Both teams prospered in non-conference play in 2025, as WVU went 25-5 outside of the Big 12 and LSU finished 27-4 outside of the SEC. History favors the Tigers in the matchup, as LSU is a perennial powerhouse on the baseball diamond. Since 1991, LSU has captured seven NCAA titles, the most recent being in 2023. WVU is in for a steep challenge, but that is why they play the game.
Players to Watch
Not only do the Mountaineers have to worry about a deep batting rotation for LSU, a team that collectively averages .300 at the plate, but WVU also has to face two of the best ace pitchers in all of college baseball.
Kade Anderson will likely take the mound for the Tigers in the first game of the series. Anderson is the nation’s current leader in strikeouts with 156 and has a record of 9-1 in 2025. The sophomore lefty is one half of the most dynamic pitching duo in college baseball, alongside Anthony Eyanson, with a 10-2 record in 17 appearances this season. These two aces will give WVU fits if the Mountaineers come unprepared to deal with the sheer ferocity of Anderson and Eyanson.
For West Virginia, the Mounties are coming off the Clemson Regional, a weekend that featured unlikely heroes such as Armani Guzman and Ben Lumsden leading the way in clutch moments. For that reason, keep an eye out for what Guzman can do at the plate and defensively as well; maybe his hot streak will continue. It is only a matter of time before we discover who the next breakout Mountaineer will be this weekend.
