While there are still options for fans to secure a ticket, the announcement highlights the excitement brewing around Mountaineer football. This is in large part due to WVU’s prodigal son returning at the helm—Rich Rodriguez.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel

It’s no secret that WVU football has lost some of its mojo over the past few years. Since 2019, the Mountaineers have been trapped in an endless loop of football purgatory, surpassing six wins just once during this span.

You can look no further and place a lot of the blame on former head coach Neal Brown. While it took six years to figure it out, WVU finally decided that Brown’s tenure had run its course.

And who better to lead the Mountaineers out of this lowly stretch than the man who brought them their greatest heights—Rich Rodriguez?

Rodriguez was once college football’s next big star in coaching. Coming off three straight 11-win seasons, he was near the top of the mountain in the coaching scene during his first stop at WVU. Between this and the infamous 13-9 game, Rodriguez chose to leave WVU in 2007.

After a few failed stops and a most recent success story at Jacksonville State, Rodriguez has followed the country roads back home to Morgantown, W.Va

The Rich Rod Effect

Time can really heal all wounds. Mountaineer fans hated Rodriguez for years because of the way he left the university. Flash forward to today, he is once again lighting a fire under the fan base.

Mountaineer fans are some of the most loyal fans you will come across in college athletics. This loyalty is what caused the love, hatred and now rekindled love for Rodriguez.

Fans understand that the product that has been placed on the field for the past six years is not a winning formula. This is why Mountaineer fans happily welcomed Rodriguez back to Morgantown.

Rodriguez has brought WVU football to some of its greatest highs and its lowest lows. But those highs are what have created a new level of excitement for Mountaineer fans.

Even though Rodriguez has yet to coach a single game in his new tenure, he has already created a feeling of high anticipation for the Mountaineer faithful. If Rodriguez can recreate some of that magic from his first stint, season tickets will be sold out for years to come.
