The West Virginia Mountaineers will welcome the Colorado Buffaloes to Morgantown on November 8th. This will be just the third meeting in the all-time series, one that is split, 1-1. Read More: Tale of the Tape: 2025 WVU Football Opponent #10 – Colorado
About the Colorado Buffaloes
Hailing from Boulder, Colorado, the Buffaloes are led by the ever-infamous Deion Sanders in his third season at the helm. Colorado finished 9-4 in 2024, but fell in the Alamo Bowl and lost Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL Draft.
The Buffaloes returned to the Big 12 in 2024 after a stint in the Pac-12. Colorado was a charter school when the Big 12 Conference formed in 1994 and began play officially in 1996. The program also had ties to the Big Eight Conference before it dissolved. The Buffaloes left for the Pac-12 in 2011 and spent well over a decade there before returning “home”.
Colorado, thanks heavily in part to the pulling power of an all-time great at the helm, is back in the limelight. Head coach Deion Sanders, “Primetime” himself, has turned the program around in two seasons.
The Buffaloes are 13-12 under Sanders. Not a groundbreaking record, right? Compare that to the two seasons before he arrived in Boulder, when Colorado combined to go 5-19 between 2021 and 2022. Simply put, the program is competent again.
Regarding the Matchup
As mentioned, the game scheduled for November 8th will be just the third time these two programs have squared off. The all-time series is split, 1-1, with games being played in 2008 and 2009.
In the home-and-home series, the hosting team won both times. In 2008, West Virginia traveled to Boulder, where the Mountaineers fell in overtime, 17-14. The Buffaloes held a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter before WVU tied it in the third. A 25-yard field goal from Aric Goodman sent the Mountaineers packing.
The story was different the following year when the Buffaloes came to Morgantown. Noel Devine went off for 220 yards on the ground and led the offensive efforts of the Mountaineers. A pair of Ryan Clarke rushing touchdowns put the game out of Colorado’s reach. WVU went on to win the 2009 matchup, 35-24.
Over 16 years later, the two teams will meet again. Colorado will be coming off its homecoming game against Arizona, while WVU will be back home after traveling to Houston. The Buffaloes will make the 1,481-mile journey to Milan Puskar Stadium for just the second time.
