WVU had its first true road game this past week, and it showed how good they are. They traveled to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M, and they left victorious. The Mountaineers won 63-45 on Sunday, Dec. 14, and dominated, especially on defense. The last Mark Kellogg Show was on Nov. 17, so plenty to talk about tonight with host Andrew Caridi. What to expect
The Mountaineers are now 10-2 after navigating their non-conference schedule well. Big 12 play starts on Dec. 21 against Houston in Morgantown. The Mountaineers’ two losses came at the hands of Ohio State in the Bahamas and Villanova in Morgantown. The Ohio State matchup was close and could have gone either way, but it did not. Villanova dominated them from start to finish in Hope Coliseum. Those losses came back-to-back and are the only blemishes on the young season.
The win against Duke was fresh in everyone’s minds for the last show, but this time around, they can talk about the two losses and the recent victories. They beat Georgia Tech in Morgantown, 82-50, and most recently beat Texas A&M on the road. The defense is playing well and harassing the ball. They rank 13th in the nation with 24.3 forced turnovers per game, with 8.3 steals per game. There are some areas they must clean up, but overall, this is a strength of the team.
On offense, they have four starters averaging over 10 points per game. Gia Cooke leads the way with 16.3 points, then Kierra Wheeler with 13.9, Sydney Shaw at 13.1, and Jordan Harrison at 12.3. Wheeler, Shaw, and Harrison also average more than two steals per game. Shaw and Harrison are essential players heading into conference play. They have lots of experience playing in this conference, and should carry more of the load as the season gets tougher. A point of emphasis that Kellogg is undoubtedly going to discuss is free-throw shooting. They make only 69.9% of their free throws this season, which must improve for the rest of the season.
