WVU is 2-2 since the last show on January 5, but it is not as bad as it seems. They lost to two ranked teams: Texas Tech and TCU. Both games were well within reach, too. They had a six-point lead in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech, and TCU beat them on a buzzer-beater three-pointer. One of their wins came on the road against Audi Crooks and Iowa State, an impressive victory. Their other win came on the road against Cincinnati on January 18. Head coach Mark Kellogg sits down with host Andrew Caridi live at Kegler’s to discuss the team and their upcoming opponents, live from Kegler’s. What to expect
WVU had its most challenging stretch of games against three ranked teams, going 1-2. They could have gone 3-0, but could not finish two games. WVU was up six points with under eight minutes to play, but could not hold off the surge from Texas Tech in the fourth quarter. The game against TCU was even closer. WVU had a two-point lead with just two seconds remaining when Marta Suarez drained a three-pointer at the buzzer. It left the crowd at Hope Coliseum stunned. The Mountaineers are clearly on par with the top teams in the country, but must find a way to close out games.

Jordan Harrison is having a great month of January, averaging 14 points, 6.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game. Her play has elevated since entering conference play against some of the best teams the Big 12 has to offer. Kierra Wheeler is also coming on strong, averaging 13.7 points and eight rebounds per game in January.
The next few games on their schedule are Arizona State, BYU, and Utah to close out January. They play Arizona State at home and make a road trip to Utah to face BYU and Utah. The Big 12 conference is arguably the best in women’s basketball, so none of those matchups are easy. Head coach Kellogg should break down what he wants from his team moving forward and what he is seeing from his team that is working. All of this and more live from Kegler’s, which you can tune into on the WVTheTorch app.
