MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker announced Thursday that three Mountaineer head coaches have received contract extensions.
Baker revealed the news during an appearance on 3 Guys Before The Game ahead of WVU’s matchup with Virginia. Read more: Wren Baker announces contract extensions for three WVU head coaches.
Baseball head coach Steve Sabins, women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg, and volleyball head coach Jen Greeny have all been extended.
“Steve Sabins is extended. Mark Kellogg’s extended. Jen Greeny’s extended,” Baker said on 3 Guys before the Game.
A milestone move for the department.
Three coaches get extended
The three coaches have each helped move their respective programs forward during their time in Morgantown.
Sabins is coming off the most successful season in WVU Baseball history. He led the Mountaineers to their first-ever appearance in the Men’s College World Series in just his second season at the helm. WVU finished the season 47-17, reaching the final four in Omaha.
Kellogg also had a historic season with the Mountaineers in 2025-26, leading WVU to its second Big 12 Tournament championship and a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. He became the first coach in program history to lead the women’s team to three consecutive 25-win seasons.
Greeny has kept building the Mountaineer volleyball program as it competes in the Big 12.
Baker said the extensions were part of the university’s process of evaluating its programs and working with coaches on new contracts.
“It’s a pretty quick process,” Baker said. “You sit down and kind of have an overall assessment of the program, generally pretty quickly agree on terms.”
Kellogg, Greeny deals
Baker also provided some details on the extensions during the conversation.
Kellogg’s new deal will keep him at West Virginia for six more years. Greeny received two additional years on her contract.
Baker was asked about the length of Sabins’ extension, but did not give a definitive number during the portion of the conversation.
The extensions come after each coach has helped establish a strong recent stretch for their respective programs.
How WVU handles extensions
Baker explained that once the university and a coach agree on the terms, both sides have attorneys review the agreements.
“We have a general counsel that reviews those deals, they have attorneys that review those deals,” Baker said.
Baker said the process begins with an overall assessment of a program before the university and coach agree on terms.
The extensions for Sabins, Kellogg, and Greeny keep three of WVU’s head coaches in place following successful stretches for their respective programs.
