This ranking marks the highest for West Virginia in program history, with the next closest in 1963 when the Mountaineers finished No. 11. This is also the first time that West Virginia has finished in the top 25 for three consecutive seasons.
This season’s final rankings come after WVU finished No. 12 in 2025 and No. 13 in 2024.
Capping off an historic season
It is not shocking to see how highly ranked West Virginia is with the season officially over now. The Mountaineers ended their season as one of the four final teams remaining in the College World Series.
Even though they lost to the MCWS runner-up North Carolina Tar Heels, WVU still produced a season for the record books. Not only was it their first appearance at the World Series, but the Mountaineers also secured two wins over the Troy Trojans.
Before that, they swept Cal Poly in the program’s first Super Regional as a host. They dominated the Mustangs’ in two games that allowed them to punch their ticket to Omaha, Nebraska.

WVU fans will also never forget the Morgantown Regional where the Mountaineers managed to advance out of the losers’ bracket after beating Kentucky in back-to-back games.
For the year, WVU posted an impressive 47-17 record and a 21-9 conference record. They also had a successful run at the Big 12 championship before losing in the championship game to the Kansas Jayhawks.
All in all, it was a season for the record books for West Virginia baseball. Without a doubt, the 2026 season will go down in history as one of the most electric in program history.
Other notable rankings

The Big 12 tournament champs finished at No. 12 and the Cowboys’ cracked the final spot at No. 25. The Jayhawks fell to the Sooners at the Lawrence Super Regional on their path to winning the championship.
