The play

Sims and Mazey’s play came when Chase Thomas came up to bat in the top of the seventh for Kalamazoo.

The Growlers were having a phenomenal inning that had seen designated hitter Trevor Johnson hit a three-run homer to cut its deficit in the game to six.

Thomas faced a full 3-2 count in his at-bat and hit a ground ball that traveled to Sims between first and second. After fielding it, Sims saw Mazey coming in and flipped it up to him with the ball still in his glove. Mazey then retrieved it, spun and fired the ball to first baseman Eli Bennett to retire Thomas.

The Flying Mummies then put out the next batter to end the top of the seventh and hold an 18-12 lead.

The remainder of the contest

The bat was also hot for Sims that night, as he led the team in RBI with five. Overall, Sims had three hits, all doubles, in his six at-bats.

Defensively, Sims had three putouts and two assists.

Although he had no hits, Mazey recorded one RBI when fellow Mountaineer product Maxwell Molessa scored on a fielding error. Mazey was walked after Molessa scored and eventually earned a run after a single from Bennett.

Mazey also had one putout and four assists when fielding.

Despite the 18-run victory, no Flying Mummies hit a home run in the contest.
