Arizona

The lone representative for the Big 12 Conference in Omaha this season, the Arizona Wildcats have been a national powerhouse for decades. The first of two teams in the final eight that the Mountaineers faced in 2025, Arizona knocked WVU out of the Big 12 tournament in the semifinal round with a 12-1 trouncing of the top seed.

The postseason meeting between the conference foes was the fourth showdown of the season, with Arizona taking two out of three games at Kendrick Family Ballpark in the regular season.

The Wildcats dealt the Mountaineers their first series loss of the season, highlighted by a 16-inning marathon in game one. The modern series started in 2023 when Arizona joined the Big 12, and WVU stole two of three games in Tucson. The overall series stands at four games to three, in favor of Arizona.

LSU

The last team that WVU faced in 2025 was LSU. The Tigers, another heavy-hitter and national champion program seven times over, took both games in the Super Regional round, combining to score 28 runs across the pair of contests.

Shockingly, the two storied programs had never met on the diamond before this.

Louisville

A former conference foe when the Cardinals and Mountaineers were members of the Big East, the matchup has remained dormant since 2014.

Between 2010 and 2014, however, WVU had limited success against UL. In the 10 contests between the two programs in that time, Louisville came out victorious in all but two games. The Cardinals took the final three games before the multi-year series concluded. The Mountaineers averaged 5.73 runs per game across the ten games, but their lackluster defensive efforts were the cause of their downfalls.

Oregon State

The Beavers had their way with the Mountaineers in three of the four games between the two programs in recent memory. All four matchups took place in Corvallis, with Oregon State playing host to WVU. An 11-0 OSU victory in 2012 was followed by the Beavers taking two of three in the trio of 2019 games. The Mountaineers had the last laugh, however, taking the final game of the series by a final score of 2-0, avoiding the sweep. WVU was outscored 24-6 across the four games.

Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleers have been a dominant force out of the Sun Belt for several years now, with a national title under their belt as well. In 12 games, CCU won eight over West Virginia. Only three of the 12 games took place in Morgantown, where Coastal took two of three. The Mountaineers struggled mightily in Conway, South Carolina, holding a 3-6 road record against Coastal.

The Others

According to the record books found here, WVU has not played UCLA, Arkansas, or Murray State in baseball. The online records only go back to 2010, but further inquiry supports the idea.

By the Numbers

By combining all the games listed in the article, WVU has struggled against programs in the 2025 MCWS. The Mountaineers hold a collective record of 10-25 against these teams since 2010, and have been outscored 263-173 in the 35 reported matchups. Based on these calculations, WVU allowed over 7.5 runs per game and only averaged 4.94 runs per game offensively.

Find out by June 23rd if one of the five teams that WVU has had history with in the past 15 years will leave Omaha, Nebraska, as this year’s MCWS champion.
