July 1 rolling around means the primary window for the transfer portal has closed. Now it is time to look at how West Virginia Baseball’s roster stands. Read more: WVU Baseball’s roster update after transfer portal officially closed.
While there will be another window for players to enter the portal at the end of the year, the time in June is the main period for players to enter their names into the transfer portal.
So barring drastic circumstances, WVU’s current roster will likely stay the same for next season, excluding roster cuts.
Update on who left
Before getting into who has joined West Virginia through the portal, listed below are those who left WVU. Thankfully for head coach Steve Sabins and his coaching staff, there were not too many departures that had a significant impact this past season.
-
LHP Andrew Middleton (TBD)
-
LHP Wyatt Mosley (TBD)
-
LHP Bryson Thacker (Florida International)
-
RHP Chase Meyer (Arizona State)
-
RHP Luke Lyman (South Alabama)
-
RHP Mac Stiffler (TBD)
-
INF Zahir Barjam (Houston)
-
INF Ryan Maggy (TBD)
In my opinion, there were not too many surprises on this list. The majority of these players did not play a significant role for the Mountaineers this past season.

It will be interesting, though, if they get matched up against Barjam or Meyer in conference play. In particular, with Meyer’s dramatic exit from the program earlier in the season, it could certainly cause some emotions to fly if Meyer is on the bump against his former team.
Transfer Portal additions
The great thing about the portal is that for all the players you lose, you can quickly add reinforcements to make up for your losses. WVU managed to do exactly that as it added a number of quality players to its roster from the transfer portal.
Here is the full list of portal additions.
-
RHP Austin Ziance (Marietta College)
-
RHP Drew Becker (Ashland University)
-
RHP Zak Whitney (SNHU)
-
LHP Robert Satin (Tampa)
-
LHP Colton Hartman (Louisville)
-
C Cash Williams (Tennessee)
-
INF Owen Henne (Seton Hill)
-
OF Jack Cannon (Le Moyne College)
-
OF Chase Ecker (William & Mary)
Just based on this list, you can see that WVU really tackled the pitching staff in the portal. After losing six in the portal and potentially more through the draft, it was important that Coach Sabins refilled his bullpen with more elite arms.
One of those elite arms should be Hartman out of Louisville. The junior from Ohio struggled last season at times with the Cardinals, garnering a high 11.65 ERA. However, with just 14 appearances, that number was inflated due to three appearances where he gave four or more runs.

Besides that, the southpaw allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his outings. That includes a five-inning scoreless game against Virginia to close out the season.
As long as he can find a way to limit big innings, Williams will become a crucial piece of WVU’s bullpen. For the one who might be the one catching him, Williams is another great addition for the Mountaineers.
As a freshman for the Volunteers last season, Williams did not see the field. However, he was the No. 10 catcher coming out of high school in 2025.
He will be a valuable young addition for the future.
JUCO signees
To round out WVU’s roster update, here are the JUCO signees the Mountaineers have picked up.
-
RHP Korey Alston
-
INF Ryan Piekutoski
-
OF Colin Coonradt
-
OF Seth Williams
Alongside the additions it made through the portal, West Virginia should be in a good position to build off its incredibly successful 2026 season.
Returners like Gavin Kelly and Chansen Cole will also help this team not skip a beat.
