WVU remains perfect through first three games

After upending its first two opponents by 36 and 41 points, respectively, WVU extended its win streak to three games, posting an 89-61 victory against the Temple Owls.

Shaw’s double-double leads WVU to an 89-61 win over Temple

The game was somewhat close early on as the Mountaineers held a 40-28 advantage at the break. However, the home team pulled away in the second half, outscoring its opponent 49-33, including a decisive 24-14 margin in the final frame.

Sydney Shaw turned in a solid performance, finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists. Gia Cooke also scored 16 points, along with four steals and two assists.

From a defensive standpoint, the Mountaineers rose to the challenge once again. They held the Owls to 33.3 percent shooting overall and 25 percent from 3-point range. WVU also converted 19 Temple turnovers into 24 points.

With another victory under their belt, the Mountaineers improved to 24-1 in non-conference games under Mark Kellogg. Additionally, WVU has produced 20 consecutive home wins, which dates back to the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Will their hot streak continue against Duke?

Duke’s defense overwhelmed Norfolk State

Although the Mountaineers are 3-0, the Blue Devils are 2-1 through their first three games, including a double-digit win over Norfolk State on Wednesday night. This game got out of hand early, as Duke led 17-5 after the first quarter, and increased its advantage to 22 points going into the break.

It was more of the same in the second half, with the Blue Devils outcoring their opponent 45-16, including a 25-6 margin in the fourth quarter. The ending result was a dominant 83-32 victory for the home team.

Taina Mair led the starters with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals on 7-for-12 shooting overall and a 2-for-4 effort from beyond the arc. Arianna Roberson and Riley Nelson were the standout performers for the bench, contributing 12 points each.

As the final score indicates, the Blue Devils’ defense was outstanding. They held Norfolk to just 16.1 percent shooting overall and 10 percent from 3-point range.

Duke won the rebounding battle 55-30 while outscoring the Spartans 38-16 inside. In addition to tallying 15 steals and 12 blocks, the Blue Devils also converted 20 turnovers into 22 points.

WVU vs. Duke Prediction: Who has the edge?

Both teams are coming off dominant wins in their previous outings. And the defensive effort displayed by these ball clubs was phenomenal, to say the least. However, given how well the Mountaineers have performed against non-conference opponents, the edge goes to the Mountaineers in this matchup.

Prediction: West Virginia in a close one
