Can West Virginia Rebound From Their Disappointing Spring Performance?

The 2025-26 roster combines experience with new energy. Key returners include graduate student Julie Bousseau, sophomore Laura Villanueva Morillo, and sophomore Lyla Byers, each of whom recorded at least 10 wins in the spring of 2025. Their consistency will be vital for leadership.
The team welcomes senior transfers Audrey Moutama and Daniella Shved, along with freshmen Lucia Tognoni and Zuzana Saxana Kudlackova, who are expected to make immediate impacts.
This blend of veterans and newcomers could elevate WVU’s performance in the fall tournaments. Coming off a historic 2024 season with a 15-13 record—the program’s best under Lisac.
Despite a successful 2024 season, the Mountaineers faced challenges in spring 2025, finishing 6-13 overall and 0-9 in Big 12 play. The fall season will offer a chance to rebound and regain confidence.
The ITA Atlantic Regional will be a critical test, as strong performances could lead to qualifications for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in November.
There are many storylines to watch for the Mountaineers this fall, including the integration of newcomers Tognoni and Kudlackova will be crucial. Their performances in early tournaments such as the Bedford Cup could indicate their potential to bolster the lineup.
Also, the Martha Thorn Invitational offers a home stage to showcase team cohesion and individual talent. The leadership of Bousseau, Villanueva Morillo, and Byers will be pivotal in mentoring younger players and setting a competitive tone.
Beyond the court, WVU’s tennis program continues to excel academically, earning ITA All-Academic Team honors for 11 straight years.

Community engagement, including youth clinics during the Martha Thorn Invitational, strengthens the team’s bond with Morgantown. With quality facilities like the Mountaineer Tennis Courts and Summit Tennis Academy, the Mountaineers are well-equipped to train and compete.

While national dominance may be a long-term goal, the 2025 fall season is about growth and momentum. If the newcomers adapt quickly and the returners maintain their form, WVU could surprise in the ITA Atlantic Regional and lay a foundation for a stronger spring. Fans should mark their calendars for an exciting season of Mountaineer tennis.
