WVU Athletics announced Thursday that WVU Men’s Basketball has agreed to a three-game series with Virginia Tech, beginning December 5 at Hope Coliseum. The matchup will mark the first meeting between the programs since 2015. Read more: WVU, Virginia Tech renewing rivalry on the court.
The Mountaineers and Hokies have history across their respective athletic programs dating back more than a century.

WVU won that game in Blacksburg, Virginia, 88-63, with standout guards Jevon Carter and Jaysean Paige scoring in double figures.
The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 49-30, which dates back to 1921. WVU has won nine of the last 13 meetings against the Hokies.

Like many other long-running series across collegiate basketball, the home team usually prevails.
VT is 17-13 against the Mountaineers in Blacksburg. Meanwhile, WVU is 27-10 at home against the Hokies.
As former conference foes, it was all WVU. The old gold and blue won 19 of 24 when the two squads shared a league.
The details
As part of the agreement, the teams will meet at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg during the 2027-28 season.
The third game of the series will be played during the 2028-29 season at Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in Charleston, West Virginia. The Mountaineers recently returned to the capital of the Mountain State in December 2025, falling to Wake Forest in front of a packed house.
Dates for the second and third contests will be determined before the start of each season, according to the release from WVU Athletics.

The first game of the series will be the 80th all-time meeting between WVU and Virginia Tech.
WVU also announced two additional nonconference games. The Mountaineers will host Mercyhurst on Tuesday, December 1, and Coppin State on Sunday, December 13. Both games will be played at Hope Coliseum.
WVU opens the 2026-27 season on Monday, Nov. 2, against Niagara.
