Setting the Scene

A reported crowd just shy of 1,000 filed in for “Pack it Pink” night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Thursday’s match was the conference home opener for the Mountaineers.

It was also only the third matchup between the two women’s soccer programs, with Arizona searching for its first win against WVU. The Wildcats will have to wait to change that.

First Half

The first 20 minutes of the match were relatively quiet, serving as a feeling-out process for the two squads. That changed early in the 21st minute.

WVU’s Maddie Levy found the back of the net, getting past Arizona goalkeeper Olivia Ramey. Levy lifted her right foot to boot the ball into the bottom-center of the goal, collecting her fourth score of the year.

Taylor White tallied her team-leading seventh assist on the goal. White has been a key factor in setting up goals all season long.

The Mountaineers racked up 10 total shots in the first half, dominating the category. Arizona had two total shots at the break. WVU possessed a 1-0 lead when the halftime buzzer sounded.

Second Half

Despite having fewer total shots than in the first half, WVU was more efficient in the second half. Six second-half shots resulted in two Mountaineer goals to pad the lead.

Taylor White came alive offensively after halftime, doing the scoring this time. Her fifth and sixth goals of 2025 came in the 53rd and 61st minutes, respectively.

On White’s first goal against Arizona, Jacey Rase set up the play with her first assist of the year. White attacked the bottom-right section of the goal, a place she would find again in short order.

Less than 10 minutes after the second Mountaineer goal of the evening, White struck again. Ajanae Respass booted the ball to White this time, marking her second assist of the season. The bottom-right of the net was compromised for the Wildcats again, and WVU shut the door on Arizona.

Final Wrap

With the win on Thursday, WVU improves to 7-2-2 and collects its second outright victory in Big 12 action. The Mountaineers continue this homestand on Sunday against Arizona State in a matinee match.

As for Arizona, the Wildcats fall to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. They continue their road trip in the Queen City as the Cincinnati Bearcats play host to Arizona at noon on Sunday.
