JJ Wetherholt homered and drove in three runs on Tuesday, lifting the Memphis Redbirds to a 10-4 win over the Norfolk Tides.
Wetherholt, the top prospect in the Cardinals’ organization, has hit safely in six consecutive games. He’s homered five times since moving to Triple-A, and it seems only organizational questions could keep him from reaching St. Louis this season.

In 12 games with the Redbirds, Wetherholt has a .340 batting average. Ten of his 16 hits have gone for extra bases, and Tuesday marked his fourth multi-hit game with Memphis. The biggest question for Wetherholt is whether the Cardinals will have space for him on the 40-man roster later this year. St. Louis must protect several young players from the Rule 5 Draft by adding them to the 40-man roster, which could block Wetherholt from reaching the majors.
The Redbirds will continue their series with Norfolk Wednesday. Since the end of the All-Star break, Wetherholt has started in nine of Memphis’ 10 games.

Reed Earns First Win of 2025
Carlson Reed struck out three and allowed one run over five innings, picking up his first win of the season Tuesday for High-A Greensboro. Reed got two runs of support early and made it stand up in a 5-1 victory at Rome.
The win marked the third consecutive five-inning start for Reed, a 2023 Pittsburgh draft pick. He began July getting roughed up in consecutive games against Aberdeen, but has since allowed just six runs in 15 innings.

Reed came up big for the Grasshoppers in the fifth after allowing a single and a double to start the inning. With his team holding a 3-0 lead, he induced an RBI groundout from Jace Grady and held Mac Guscette to a short fly to left field to hold the second runner at third. Reed then closed out the Emperors by striking out Luis Sanchez. For the game, Reed allowed just four hits.
Greensboro continues its series with Rome Wednesday. Reed will likely make his next start next week, when the Grasshoppers host Asheville.
Tucker Singles in Indians Loss
Tevin Tucker singled in his second at-bat, but the Spokane Indians couldn’t hold the Hillsboro Hops, taking a 5-2 loss on Tuesday night.
Tucker, in his third season in the minors since leaving West Virginia, has hit much more consistently in July. He’s batted .268 for the month with 10 RBIs, and he’s swiped nine bases. That’s a far cry from where he was earlier in the year, but it’s why he’s batting just .201 overall.
Tucker’s single came in the fourth inning, when he reached base with one out and took second on a balk. However, the Indians’ next two batters couldn’t advance him. Spokane hit 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and it didn’t score after the first inning.
Spokane continues its series against Hillsboro Wednesday. Tucker has been the Indians’ everyday shortstop for most of July, and he’s likely to have his name in the lineup for most of the series.
