November 29, 2025. That was the date for one of the worst losses in WVU Football history, when the Mountaineers closed the season with a 49-0 loss to a top-five Texas Tech squad. For WVU, it can only hope for a better result this time around when they travel to Lubbock, Texas, on November 7. Read more: Tale of the Tape 2.0 – Texas Tech.
The Mountaineers and Red Raiders meet for a Week 10 showdown, with WVU coming off a bye week. It will mark the second consecutive game where the old gold and blue has to travel to the Lone Star State, following a Week 8 date with TCU.

Texas Tech leads the all-time series, 8-7, and 4-3 in Lubbock. WVU won the lone neutral site meeting in the 1937-38 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, which was the first and only meeting between the two programs until 2012.
Awful memories of ’25
To be brief, WVU’s 49-0 shutout loss in this past season’s finale was historic in all the wrong ways. TTU outgained the Mountaineers offensively by nearly 400 yards in route to WVU’s worst loss since its inaugural game as a program in 1891.

The loss mercifully shut the door on a 4-8 campaign in head coach Rodriguez’s long-anticipated first year back.
Other matchup history
Long before the 2025 drubbing, the series started on January 1, 1938. WVU pulled off the mild upset in the Sun Bowl with a 7-6 win. Davey Isaac ran in a second quarter touchdown from one yard out, and the extra point that followed was enough to make a difference. The Red Raiders’ lone score also came in the second, but a missed extra point ended up being the downfall of TTU that afternoon.

WVU and TTU would not meet again until the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 in 2012.
Tech got the best of WVU in the first two meetings before the Mountaineers rattled off five straight wins between 2014 and 2018. The pendulum swung back in favor of the opposition, with TTU snagging four straight between 2019 and 2022.
WVU picked up a win in 2023, but the Red Raiders’ recent successes on the national stage proved to be a killer in the past two matchups. Combine the 2025 blowout with the 52-15 loss in 2024, and the Mountaineers have been outscored 101-15 across two games.
On Tech
It is no secret this team is the clear favorite to win the Big 12 once again. The lone conference representative in this past edition of the College Football Playoff and a program with more money than it probably knows what to do with, the hype is earned.
The Red Raiders return a quarterback in Will Hammond with some experience, last impressing in a 34-10 win over Utah this past September. The redshirt sophomore completed 13-16 passes for 169 yards, with two touchdowns to boot. To note, he is coming off an ACL injury that ended his season a few weeks later.
There were other plans under center, with initial expectations including Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby taking the snaps. It is well-documented why that plan never came to fruition.
Micah Hudson returns as a top receiver as well. He caught two passes against WVU last year, both being touchdowns. One went for 30 yards, while the other went 15.
It also helps when the offensive line and pack of running backs are in the upper echelon of the sport at the collegiate level.

Defense wins championships, though, and Tech has one. Even after losing two top-tier guys, the program’s work in the portal is borderline unmatched. They are simply loaded with experience and ability — the best money and competent coaching can buy.
On paper, WVU stands little chance. Then again, it is early August. This game in early November could look a lot different.

WVU battles the Big 12’s reigning champs on November 7 at the recently-rebranded Galaxy Stadium, freshly reimagined as a state-of-the-art facility. Kickoff and TV information are not yet available.
