August felt like it came and went. To be fair, only about half of the month featured WVU Athletics.
Now September is upon us, and the first full month of Mountaineer sports is ahead. Read more: September 2026 WVU Athletics Preview: Bring on football and more.
The month of September will feature 32 different WVU Athletics events across Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country, and even Baseball.
Here is what to look forward to in September.
Football
The long-awaited return of WVU Football is almost here. Throughout the month of September, WVU Football will be in action for its first four games of the 2026 season.
The first three games of the season are non-conference matchups (Coastal Carolina, UT Martin, and Virginia), while the end of September will mark the Mountaineers playing its first 2026 Big 12 Conference game against Oklahoma State.
- Coastal Carolina vs. WVU – September 5 @ 12 p.m.
- UT Matin vs. WVU – September 12 @ 1 p.m.
- WVU vs. Virginia (Neutral) – September 19 @ 7:30 p.m.
- Oklahoma State vs. WVU – September 26 @ TBD
WVU will play three home contests throughout the month. The other game is a neutral site contest in Charlotte, North Carolina, at Bank of America Stadium, the Duke Mayo Classic. The stadium is the home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.

WVU Football is led by head coach Rich Rodriguez, who is in the second year of his second stint. The Mountaineers went 4-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play this past season.

Men’s Soccer
The month of August was tough for WVU Men’s Soccer. It started the season ranked No. 23, but has since fallen out of the United Soccer Coaches Poll after going 1-1-1.
In the month of September, WVU will take the pitch six times. The Mountaineers will face all but one of its last five non-conference opponents (No. 10 Akron, George Mason, Denver, and Duquesne) and begin Sun Belt Conference action against Georgia State and No. 12 Marshall.
The Mountaineers will play five straight games at home to begin September before traveling to Huntington, West Virginia, to face in-state rival Marshall in this year’s installment of the Mountain State Derby.

WVU Men’s Soccer is led by seventh-year head coach Dan Stratford. WVU Men’s Soccer started the 2026 season as projected to win the Sun Belt Conference.

Women’s Soccer
Perhaps the highlight of August for WVU Athletics was the rise of WVU Women’s Soccer. It started the 2026 season ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and has risen all the way to No. 7 with an undefeated 4-0 record.
In September, the Mountaineers will face five opponents. It will have its final two non-conference opponents (Marshall and UConn) before beginning Big 12 play against Baylor, Colorado, and Iowa State.
The matchup against Marshall is the first Mountain State Derby in Women’s Soccer in Morgantown since 2011. The two teams faced each other this past season in Huntington.
The Women’s Soccer team will also get its fair share of home contests at the beginning of the month before hitting the road for the last two games of the month.

WVU Women’s Soccer is led by 31st-year head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. The team is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season.

Volleyball
WVU Volleyball just completed its first home tournament of the 2026 season at the end of August. It began the season with a 1-1 record.
In September, WVU will play 10 matches. The matches include its final three non-conference tournaments and two Big 12 Conference contests.
The Mountaineers will have the opportunity to serve as host to a second tournament, the West Virginia Invitational. The other two tournaments will be on the road, and WVU will get its first two Big 12 matches at home.
The first Big 12 match of the 2026 season for WVU is against 2025 Big 12 Champions, Arizona State.

WVU Volleyball is led by fifth-year head coach Jen Greeny. The team had its first .500 season since 2021 this past season.

Golf
WVU Men’s Golf is currently competing in its first tournament of the 2026-27 season. Tuesday will mark day two of the inaugural New York Harbor Cup, with the Mountaineers in eighth place after day one.
After the completion of the New York Harbor Cup, the Mountaineers will have two more tournaments this month. Both tournaments were won by the Mountaineers in 2025.

- Island Resort Collegiate (Bark River, Michigan) – September 6-7 @ 8 a.m.

WVU Golf is led by 12th-year head coach Sean Covich. The team reached the NCAA Marana Regional this past season.

Cross Country
WVU Women’s Cross Country will officially begin its 2026 season in the month of September.
The Mountaineers will travel to compete in two road meets.

WVU Women’s Cross Country is led by 20th-season head coach Sean Cleary. It reached the NCAA East Preliminary Regional this past season.
Baseball and more
While it is not nearly time for the 2027 WVU Baseball season yet, the team will have two Gold vs. Blue matchups at Kendrick Family Ballpark on September 18 and September 25, both at 6 p.m.
WVU Baseball reached the NCAA College World Series for the first time this past season.
